At the XPO Logistics base in Stoke, 500 staff pick and pack M&S goods for distribution.
Staff levels at the vast site in Birmingham Road, can rise to approaching 1,000 at peak periods and there are plenty of young apprentices making up those numbers.
XPO Logistics have been working with PM Training for two years and are impressed with the partnership.
Clare Antrobus, HR Manager, said: “I was aware of PM Training by reputation so I made contact with them, and once we understood the model and the concept, we haven’t looked back.
“In two years, we’ve taken on about 30 apprentices from PM Training. The main benefit for us is the added value which other apprentice providers do not offer.
“For example, PM Training offer mentor courses, regular contact with assessors and fantastic links with local schools.
“The apprentices arrive with a good level of work experience, having spent time on the Homeworks vans while they’ve been at PM Training, this makes them more work ready.”
XPO Logistics has noticed higher levels of retention with PM Training’s apprentices compared with other providers, and 99 per cent of the young people have gone on to permanent positions once they have completed their apprenticeship.
Mark Birks, Training Co-ordinator at XPO Logistics, said: “We offer the apprentices further training in-house while they are here, they can get a reach truck licence, lateral stacker training etc.
“We invest in them and, after their apprenticeship, they are nearly all happy to stay here.”
Like every new starter, there is a degree of behavioural development for the young people starting at XPO Logistics.
The international company is dedicated to offering employment opportunities to young people and runs apprenticeship schemes across its UK sites.
Clare added: “There are career prospects in the logistics trade, and when we take on apprentices we always try to demonstrate that to them.
We are looking to them to be the team leaders of the future and that’s how we position our apprenticeship scheme.”
