Chesterton Mining Memorial Sculpture #MadeByArtworks  

This memorial stands in Castle Street, Chesterton, and respects those who lost their lives in the 1937 Holditch Colliery disaster.

Influenced by an archive photograph. The sculpture features five rescue miners returning to the surface having fought tirelessly to save lives.

The steel sculpture represents the local industry including mining, brickwork, steelwork and pottery.


In July 1937, 30 people perished and eight were seriously injured in a disaster set off by flames and a set of devastating explosions.


This sculpture commemorates the brave rescuers and people who lost their lives in the disaster.


The sculpture took a total of one month to make from design to manufacturing and installation.
